The Dinosaurs, Austin's soccer team for the aged, won the over 50 men's national soccer championship tournament near Seattle, Washington over the July 4 weekend. The Dinosaurs, affiliated with the Wanderers soccer club (Austin Municipal Soccer Association, Texas State Soccer Association South) represented the SE region of the US and defeated each of the other three regional champions from Massachusetts, Colorado, and Washington state. The Austin team team outscored their opponents in four games 22 to 6. They defeated last year's national champions, the Seattle Reign, by a score of 6 to 3.
Dinosaur captain Steve Magee, a UT Finance Professor, said that Austin's star players included software engineer Alec Nichols of Austin IBM, who scored 5 goals. Frank Allcorn, the 64- year-old Austin soccer legend, had one of the best shots into goal of the tournament, Austin soccer coach and former British professional George Ley, defensive standout Rusty Mase, and forward Peter Marquardt. Others Dinosaur stars included Argentine star and tournament MVP Jorge Cock, Dallas soccer coach and former Brazilian national team member Zakeenya, forward Segio Guerrero, Dallas sweeper Hans Wango, a former professional Swedish hockey player and goalie Udo Waechter of Surrey, BC.
Co-captains Allcorn, Gordon Finch, George Corrall and Wolfgang Degemann helped Magee devise an exotic alignment with 6 defenders, no midfielders and 4 forwards, which delivered the 22 goals while giving up only 6 goals.
